Good Mechanics
A golf swing is only as strong as its weakest link. A potentially sound swing can be ruined by a poor setup or grip. You will be forced to make some sort of compensation mid swing to make up for it. A sound grip will allow you to present the club face to the ball square to the path. It will also create a more consistent ball flight and give you the skills to shape and manoeuvre the ball with ease. When training your grip you must also train the correct amount of grip pressure. Too tight and you tend to lose the ability to move your hands and wrists freely.
Ben Hogan stated “Consciously trying to control the face of the club at impact is folly. You cannot time such a delicate and devilish thing. It happens too fast, much too fast” You can control the club face with an ideal grip, not by manipulating the hands or wrists.
The quality of movement in your swing is a by-product of your set up. Balance, power, timing, rhythm and mechanics. If you have a poor set up it will negatively affect every one of these factors.
A sound set up gives you the ability to shift and turn freely and fully on the backswing, remain balanced, and aggressively rotate forward during the downswing and follow-through. It creates the opportunity to produce a downswing conducted in sequence, with the hips leading and also leads to a sound impact position where the left side of the body has cleared and the right side is working down and through.
